Has A New ChatGPT Competitor Emerged?

Stability AI launches an open source LLM (Large Language Model) to compete with Open AI’s Chat GPT

Lot of exciting news in AI this week. Stability AI launches an open source LLM (Large Language Model) to compete with Open AI’s Chat GPT, CNBC anchor interviews himself on live TV using AI and is Elon threatening to sue Microsoft and/or Open AI? Let’s dive in.

Stability AI Launches Stable LM

Stability AI released a new open-source language model, StableLM. The Alpha version of the model is available in 3 billion and 7 billion parameters, with 15 billion to 65 billion parameter models to follow. The big difference between Stability and Chat GPT? Open Source vs Closed Source. Let’s look at the pros and cons of each.

Open source software provides more accessibility, transparency and customization as opposed to closed source. With open source software is often freely available to the public, making them more accessible to researchers, developers, and other interested parties. This accessibility can lead to a wider range of applications and innovations. They are also more transparent providing more transparency about how the technology works, as anyone can access and review the source code. This transparency can promote trust and understanding of the technology. Developers can also modify and customize the technology to suit their needs, allowing for more versatility and flexibility.

On the other hand, closed source software tends to offer more control over the technology. This is an important factor to think about when it comes to AI because of how powerful AI already is and how powerful it will become. There is a real debate on whether this technology should be closed or open. The applications and use cases will be greatly expanded with the launch of StableLM but will there be more risks?

CNBC Anchor Uses AI Live

On Friday CNBC anchor Brian Sullivan interviewed himself live on air using AI. This feels like another milestone for AI as it continues to grow in popularity in mainstream media. The voice was created by Forever Voices which allows you to experience the magic of engaging in 2-way voice conversations with iconic people including Steve Jobs, Taylor Swift, and more, right through your phone.

Is Elon Gearing Up For A Lawsuit?

Elon Musk and Open AI have a complicated history. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 alongside prominent Silicon Valley figures like Sam Altman, Reid Hoffman, Peter Theil, and others. They all pledged $1 billion to the project at the time.

Musk recently wrote "OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it "Open" AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all."

Last week Microsoft annoucement drops Twitter from its advertising platform as they refuse to pay Twitter’s API fees. To which Musk responds “They trained illegally using Twitter data. Lawsuit time.”

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this.
